Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK is responsible for all Daimler Truck products sold in the UK, including Fuso trucks. Since winning the 2021 GreenFleet LGV Manufacturer of the Year Award, Bidfood and Speedy have taken delivery of the Fuso eCanter, and the first Mercedes-Benz eActros 19- and 27-tonne electric trucks have arrived.The company has also taken the first UK orders for the electric Mercedes-Benz eEconic. In September, three new e-trucks were announced; the Next Generation Fuso eCanter comes in 42 configurations, with up to 125 miles of range; the eActros 300 4x2 tractor; and the new eActros LongHaul has a 600kWh battery capacity and a range of up to 310 miles. An eConsulting service and charging partnerships also look beyond the trucks themselves.

2018 Winner: Iveco - Stralis NP 460hp
The Stralis NP 460hp 6x2 tractor unit is the world’s first single fuel gas-powered heavy truck for 44-tonne operation, designed to make transitioning to gas possible for the 90% of British heavy truck fleets which require three-axle tractors. A choice of CNG, Bio CNG, LNG or Bio LNG fuels is available. Already this year the Stralis NP has received orders from fleets including Clipper, Dawsons, H Parkinson Haulage, Hermes, John Lewis, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, UPS and Waitrose. With many already in service. IVECO expects to put around 200 gas-powered medium and heavy trucks on the roads during 2018.

Scania’s new truck generation, with its updated 13-litre engine, is popular with European hauliers who appreciate the lowest fuel consumption, highest average speeds and lowered C02 effects that help to keep costs and environmental impacts low. By adopting a model where CO2´reduction is valued as much as cost in choosing the transport solution, Scania aims to reduce emissions from its land transport logistics flows in Europe and Latin America by 50% by 2025. Scania will achieve the target by further optimising production processes and by converting to renewable sources.

The Canter Eco Hybrid 7.5t is the first series-production hybrid light-duty truck in Europe. Generating energy as it brakes, with start/stop as standard and the DUONIC® dual clutch transmission, the hybrid system can help reduce fuel consumption by up to 23%. Wincanton, Hovis and DPD will be the first UK businesses to operate a new fully electric variant which promises a range of 60 miles from a full charge and offers zero-emission running with a payload up to 4.5 tonnes. The UK trial involves nine eCanters and is set to be a two-year project. FUSO aims to produce 500 eCanters over the next 12 months and launch an update in 2019 with enhanced range.
Electra Commercial Vehicles
As part of an initiative to drive down air pollution in London’s Square Mile, a trial of the UK’s first fully-electric waste collection truck has begun. Electra’s 26-tonne truck runs on lithium-ion batteries and is designed for urban environments with short routes and can complete a full 10-hour shift. The battery is used both for compression of the waste and for powering the vehicle. Electra uses Tier One OEM world class suppliers to produce its 100% electric vehicles, which pass stringent environmental and quality standards in manufacturing and supply.

With the launch of New Stralis (natural power), IVECO has the most sustainable long-distance heavy truck ever. It features the IVECO Cursor 9 and Cursor13 Euro VI gas engines, delivering great power and torque giving the driver class leading diesel equivalent driving performance. The New Stralis NP can be run on either CNG or LNG. 2017 has also seen the introduction of the Eurocargo medium range CNG at 12 and 16 tonnes in RHD, which are particularly ideal for urban and municipal operations. The Daily CNG range has recently been extended and enhanced with Hi Matic fully automatic 8 speed transmission - allowing for drives of up to 4.25t for alternative fuel vehicles, making it the ideal vehicle for parcel distribution operators striving to reduce their environmental impact. Completing the IVECO offering is the zero tailpipe emission Daily Electric, available from 3.5 to 5.2 tonnes in van, chassis cab and minibus versions. It is an ideal vehicle for operators wishing to use a zero tailpipe emission vehicle to contribute towards improving air quality in those areas currently outside of acceptable air quality limits.

The range of options available in Paneltex truck bodies means they can be designed to suit any operation. Available in 7.5-11-tonne configurations with a choice of 3,815 or 4,475mm wheelbase lengths, Paneltex conversions use an Isuzu chassis cab as a base and can be built either to operate as heavy-duty short-haul vehicles or as less obtrusive urban delivery vehicles. Three battery pack options, with power of 80, 100 or 120kWh can be chosen, with up to 130 miles available on a single charge. Its refrigerated trucks also boast long operating lives and have high thermal efficiency. The 3.5T-26T N3 range for example, has a number of different options from tail-lifts, side doors, meat hanging systems and refrigeration units to help suit any operation. The longevity of these vehicles, when combined with the efficiency of the insulation and the high payload available, makes them very attractive to operators looking for a low total cost of ownership, where quality remains high.

Dubbed the “leader in long haul”, Volvo’s FH and FH16 deliver safety and economy. The engines has been engineered to save fuel, without compromising performance and its I-Shift feature maximises performance and efficiency by monitoring driver habits to help reduce fuel consumption. The Volvo FL, on the other hand, is perfect for city distribution as it is built for constant use. It is fuel-efficient with a flatter torque curve and faster build up of power. Its automated six-speed I-Sync transmission always ensures the perfect gear is selected - meaning better fuel consumption, lower emissions and less clutch wear and tear. The small, medium-duty truck can also be adapted for rougher conditions, too. Volvo Trucks’ FE model is also perfect for city distribution, which also has I-Shift transmission to make fuel savings. Its Euro 6 compliant engine also means that the vehicle will be able to avoid restricted areas as a result of harsher regulation on older diesel models and it has been designed to improve efficiency and profitability to LGV operators.

Iveco’s claims that its new Stralis NP, which runs on compressed and liquid natural gas, is the most sustainable international transport truck ever. At its heart is the Iveco Cursor 9 Natural Power Euro VI engine, which delivers the same power and torque output as its diesel equivalent. It is the first natural gas truck with a 12-speed automated gearbox - the Eurotronic transmission guarantees lower fuel consumption. The LNG-only version has a record range autonomy of 1,500 km and features the Hi-Way cab, which was introduced on the “International Truck of the Year 2013” Stralis Hi-Way.

Isuzu trucks are now used by countless organisations in just over 120 countries throughout the world. 2016 saw Volvo Trucks launch improvements on its FM, FMX, FH and FH16 model ranges by increasing engine fuel efficiency together with new aerodynamic improvements on cab and chassis, which can potentially reduce fuel costs by up to five per cent. On the engine, changes have been made to comply with the Euro-6 Step-C regulations, such as low-friction pistons, an all-new improved turbo, a higher compression ratio, an enhanced camshaft and other software updates. This is added to a re-designed front spoiler, air deflectors, mudguards and a tighter wheel housing on FH models to improve the aerodynamics and reduce air resistance.

A refresh of DAF’s highly popular XF range features a new chassis made of high-tensile steel which is powered by PACCAR MX-13 and MX-11 engines, developed for maximum efficiency, high performance and low operating costs. A new gearbox, the AS Tronic, includes EcoRoll (truck rolling downwards with an idling engine) and FastShift (no clutch disengagement between 11th and 12th gear) to further enhance fuel efficiency. DAF has also introduced an extensive programme of improvements to the popular LF series.

2016 saw Scania unveil two new R and S models, with the S truck said to be up to five per cent more efficient than the previous model. It features new drag-reduction technology with three adjustable air deflectors to improve the alignment between the cab and the trailer roof. Three models will be SCR-only with the new 13-litre 500hp unit engine. Scania in the UK was once again recognised by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership this year for dedicated gas-powered trucks and buses, which are now in daily service with a number of high profile operators in the UK, including Argos and the John Lewis Partnership.
